Study 20. The Beast and the Antichrist
As mentioned in the Tribulation study, a time is coming, marked by the rise of the Antichrist. This period will align with well-known prophecies of the Beast’s arrival and the imposition of the mark of the Beast. The Antichrist will deceive many into believing that he is the true Christ.
Consider these definitions:
- The Beast: In the book of Revelation, the Beast is a powerful evil ruler or empire that opposes God and persecutes believers. It is often described as a world leader who gains great political power near the end times.
- The Antichrist: Is a figure mentioned in the John 1 and other writings in the New Testament. The term Antichrist means “against Christ” or “in place of Christ.” It can refer to: Anyone who denies that Jesus is the Christ, and a specific future world leader who deceives people and opposes Jesus before the end times.
- Satan: Is the spiritual being believed to be the chief enemy of God. The name Satan means “adversary” or “accuser.” In the book of Job and other references in the Bible, Satan is portrayed as a tempter and a deceiver who leads people away from God. and is often referred to as the devil.
The Beast and the Antichrist
The Beast, which is discussed mostly in the books of Daniel and Revelation, appears to be a kingdom or power that is empowered by Satan (Revelation 13:4). The Antichrist appears to be a future ruler with the beast, and is one who denies Christ.
Let’s look at some Bible verses about how they will work together.
- Daniel 7:8, 20–25 — A “little horn” rises out of a fourth beast, which might be the Antichrist to come.
- Daniel 8:23–25 — An evil king rises and opposes God.
- Revelation 13:11–18 — This beast performs signs and enforces its mark on the people.
- Revelation 14:9–11, 16:2, 19:20, 20:4 — There will be consequences of receiving the mark of the beast.
The Apostle John wrote of the coming Antichrist and tells us that many antichrists already exist in the world, those who are against Christ. The Antichrist appears to be a future ruler with the Beast.
- 1 John 2:18 — “You have heard that Antichrist is coming…”
- 1 John 4:3 — The spirit of the antichrist is already in the world.
- 2 John 1:7 — Those who deny Jesus came in the flesh are called antichrists.
- 1 John 2:22 — Anyone who denies the Father and the Son is an antichrist.
- 2 Thessalonians 2:3–12 — Paul spoke of a lawless one, a man of lawlessness who appears to do the work of Satan, and who exalts himself above God. He will perform false miracles and will be destroyed at the return of Jesus Christ.
