Why should the Bible be important to you?

biblestudygroupIt may come as no surprise to you that the Holy Bible continues to be the most widely published book worldwide. Despite its age, the Bible has far outsold more than any other book, with 3.9 billion copies sold over just the last 50 years alone.[1]Have you considered why this has remained such an important body of information? Should it be important to you?

While there is no shortage of books written about and by various religions, the Bible is the only one which claims to be the actual words of Almighty God. Those who believe the Bible also believe that God inspired various people, through hundreds of years, to record His words for mankind. The words “…thus says the Lord…” is found in the Bible more than 3,000 times! [2]

The Holy Scriptures were written by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit by over 40 different authors from all walks of life: shepherds, tent-makers, physicians, fishermen and kings, to name but a few. Despite these differences in occupation and the span of years it took to write it, the Bible is an extremely cohesive, unified book that is even backed up by historical facts.

Why should the Bible matter to you? If you consider it to be the “blueprint” for mankind to learn how to live their lives in this world in order to be able to live in the perfect, unending one to come, then it should be important to you. If you come to consider it the ultimate “how-to” book ever recorded, you will want to keep learning from the words it contains!

While we may have a relatively comfortable life right now, most everyone will at some point ask themselves, “What will happen to me when my time is up in this world?” Some people may be comfortable with the thought that they will simply cease to exist, but many others want a solid hope that there is a grander and more perfect existence to someday be realized. Through the instruction of the Holy Bible, God’s inspired word, we can attain that hope.

You might ask yourself, “How do I know if the Bible’s words are true?” Shortly before Christ’s crucifixion, Pontius Pilate posed the question to Jesus, “What is truth?” Jesus replied, “…for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Everyone that is of the truth hears my voice.” (Read John 18:36-38.)

Jesus spoke everything the Father had given him and was the greatest spokesman and teacher of Almighty God’s truth to ever walk among mankind. Many of his words are recorded in the scriptures for our learning and encouragement. Jesus also said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and I do nothing on my own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught me.” (John 8:28 NASB) (See also John 3:31-35; John 6:63-68; John 14:10.)

Because Jesus Christ endeavored to do the will of his Father at all times and spoke what he learned from his Father, those who are sincerely seeking the truth will pay attention to Christ’s words that are recorded in the Holy Bible.

God’s other appointed ministers in the scriptures also spoke the truth; the apostle Paul being just one example. In 1 Timothy 2:7 he wrote: “For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying) as a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.” (NASB)  In 1 Thessalonians 2:13 he wrote, “For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe. (NASB)

Perhaps you have spent time questioning different religions, teachings and doctrines in hopes of learning what true, but still have doubts. In reality, learning what is true is easy to do and really requires nothing more than any translation of the Bible that you like. All a person needs is some inquisitiveness and an open mind and heart.

To give an added sense of confidence, it may help to remember what Paul wrote in his letter to Titus: “…in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago.“ (Titus 1:2 NASB) If Jehovah God cannot lie that obviously mean his words are true! Truth is sincerity, honesty, reality and conformity with fact and that is what His word has to offer.

Have you ever stopped to think about why the Holy Bible has continued to be such an important body of work that has been passed down for generations? It is because God makes sure that His words will be available to those who want to learn from Him. The information contained in it never goes out-of-date.

The Bible holds a vast array of topics, ranging from the history of God’s people to prophecies yet to be fulfilled. The scriptures provide guidance on how to live a more contented and satisfying life now, but even more importantly, how to attain a perfect life in the everlasting one to come. With a little investment in one’s time, it is possible to learn about future events, as well as how to improve as individuals. We can learn from the examples and experiences of those who remained faithful to God’s word throughout time.

Are you familiar with the scriptures about Jesus Christ being the good shepherd? (Read John 10:1-15.). His heavenly Father sent him on a quest to gather those who love his word, seek his truth and thirst for a place where righteousness will reign. John 10:4 says that he goes before his sheep and they follow him because they know his voice. If we hear his voice (words) and are striving to learn and live the truth, we will never be abandoned.

It makes perfect sense then, that we should take the time to explore one of the most enduring written words ever to have been passed down through the years. There is a reason that the Holy Bible has survived. It is truly a guidebook from our Creator on how we should live now so that we can enjoy all the riches and depth that His and His Son’s kingdom (government) will provide for time unending. (Romans 11:33-36)
