Or, to allow yourself to slip away slowly bit by bit?
Paul’s concern about the followers of Jesus Christ was evident. “But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 11:3
What if you allow your desire for the truth to wane?
“Slip slidin’ away
Slip slidin’ away
You know the nearer your destination
The more you’re slip slidin’ away” (Another Paul - Simon)
Slipping away is what the devil wants us to do. But we must remain steadfast.
For this reason, we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it. Heb 2:1
What if you neglect the fire that Yahweh/Jehovah and Jesus Christ filled you with to serve them?
Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” Hebrews 3:12-19
If your fire for the Almighty and His Son diminishes, what will be the end result?
But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. Revelation 2:4-5
How do you know if you are slip sliding?
My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. James 5:19-20
Keep watch over your soul. Help the bishop and deacon with less of a burden, because as elders they watch over your souls also.
Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers. 1 Timothy 4:16
Like we discussed last week, part of keeping your passion and fire alive is to take care of your body.
But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. 1 Corinthians 9:27
We are all being tested every day.
Keep alert in your attention so that you minimize your slippage, mistakes, and blunders.
If you can’t seem to get ahead of your pain, sorrow, bodily aches, or depression, seek help. Any one of us can help. Or might need help.
Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. James 1:12
