A Safe Harbor

It can be so difficult not to feel despair and sadness when witnessing the destruction and heartbreak in the aftermath of the hurricanes in Texas and Florida, and even all of the other turmoil around the globe. You may even be questioning your faith in times like this… “Where is God in all of this?” “When will the misery end for mankind?”

But we should never give up. God didn’t tell us our lives would be without hardships or tempest right now, but He did promise something incomparably better to come with His new direction that will one day encompass the universe.

In the meantime, we can still find some peace of mind in holding onto the hope provided by God’s word and what can be accomplished through our sincere prayers for strength and endurance.

“God is our refuge and strength,
    an ever-present help in trouble.
 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
    and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
 though its waters roar and foam
    and the mountains quake with their surging.

The Lord Almighty is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress.”  -Psalm 46:1-3, 7

Christ Jesus, the Son of Almighty God, gave this advice to his followers:

“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.”  -John 14:27

”These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” –John 16:33

Those words are a reminder that we, too, can achieve some peace and confidence amidst a troubled and turbulent world. Christ also told us by our perseverance we will secure our lives. (Luke 21:19)

The apostle Paul offered this encouragement:

”I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.  But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?  For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,  neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” –Romans 8:18, 25,35, 38-39

Don’t despair. Something far better is coming as promised! Pray, open the book our Creator has given us, and learn what those precious promises are.

“The fruit of that righteousness will be peace;
    its effect will be quietness and confidence forever.
 My people will live in peaceful dwelling places,
    in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest.”   --Isaiah 32:17-18
