A Resolution Worth Keeping

Written by

At the close of another year, many people engage in some reflective thinking about the time gone by. They may remember things they have done--both the positive and negative--or even harbor some regrets about what they didn’t accomplish. Some individuals embrace the beginning of a new year as a time to make a fresh start or resolve to become a better person in one way or another.

Perhaps you, too, have spent some time in recent weeks contemplating the future or considering the kind of person you are. Maybe you have cultivated some ideas about what you might improve or change in the months to come. But how quickly do your hopeful expectations seem to fade after a few weeks; forgotten in the midst of our generally hectic lives that seem to pass so quickly?

Many individuals make one or more New Year’s resolutions, such as losing weight, exercising more, or promising to become a better spouse, parent or friend. There appears to be no shortage of “self help” books and CDs on the market to assist you in reaching any of those possible goals. Although some guides provide useful information on specific topics, we should remember, too, that there is one book in particular that can truly help us achieve more peace of mind and a happier, more productive life. Chances are you have this frequently overlooked text already in your possession, because that book is the Holy Bible.

Although some people regard the Bible as being “outdated” when it comes to the time we live in, that is hardly the case at all. While the scriptures do contain historical data about God’s people in past generations, there is also a wealth of valuable information dispersed through the Bible’s entirety that pertains to our everyday lives. It is truly the best “self help” book ever to be found and the start of a new year may be the perfect time to begin exploring what’s in it!

If you are a regular subscriber to this newsletter, you have probably noticed the “Proverb of the month” section. So much of what is written in that particular book of the Bible provides common sense wisdom about human behavior, both good and bad. Reading through its many chapters can provide a great “barometer” to evaluate how you generally react to certain situations in your own life. Even if you only have a few minutes to spend reading the Bible here and there, you may be pleasantly surprised by how much you can take away from it in a very short time!

The word that Jehovah God provided in the Bible by way of His true ministers, offers helpful information on how to treat others, how to communicate better, and how to overcome negative emotions such as anger, jealousy, and hypocrisy. Read through the Bible books of Matthew, Mark, Luke or John and you will be reading what God’s own Son Jesus Christ instructed his disciples. Many of the letters that Paul wrote contain lessons in interpersonal skills and even the importance of taking care of ourselves. A few examples can be found in Ephesians 4:21-32, Galatians 5:19-26, and 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.

Taking heart to the information in the scriptures cannot only make our lives more fulfilling all the way around, but also holds the details that show us the way to an unending life in a perfect setup. Along with the start of a new year, there may also be uncertainty about what the future holds in a world that grows more and more unstable. We are constantly faced with very real fears about the economy, wars, employment, disease, and violence in the very places we call home. Researching the scriptures can provide both answers as well as comfort about the time to come.

While the world’s situation definitely won’t improve for awhile, a main focus of the scriptures provides glimpses into Jehovah God’s new kingdom (government); a kingdom that will far exceed our wildest imagination about what total peace and perfection feels like. It will be a place that sees no sorrow or death, inhabited by those who love righteousness and whose desire is to serve Almighty God and His Son. If you need some encouragement, read Psalm 37:11, Isaiah 9:7, Isaiah 32:17-18, Isaiah 65:17-25, and Revelation 21:4-5.

If you are sincerely working to learn Jehovah’s way of doing things, there is a guarantee from Jesus Christ that your basic needs will be taken care of. (Matthew 6:25-34) Even though life in this world won’t always be easy or feel completely safe, the scriptures provide many clues on what to expect in the last days so that we won’t be caught unprepared. All these things can provide us with greater peace of mind in our daily lives!

Paul wrote, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17) Therefore, we would do well to consider the Bible as a perfect guide book from our Creator to us.

It makes good sense to resolve to do something that will not only help you live a more satisfying, productive, and tranquil life in this frenzied world, but which will make a difference for eternity, because the Bible contains the instructions on how we can live forever! The amazing thing is that you can begin that process at any time just by taking the simple step of opening both your Bible and your mind. With an honest desire and a curious attitude, anyone can learn with the help Jehovah gives through His Son. Best of all, it is all free and available for the taking!

And please remember, we are here to help show you what we’ve been allowed to know. There is no end to what we can discover! If ever you have questions, please contact us by phone or by email. We’ll try to help!
